Related Disciplines

Giving one solid classification of informatics related disciplines is challenging. We tried to create a defined taxonomy to catagorize the various related fields. Perhaps it's easier to describe different specializations within the field and get the conversation started from there.

"Used as a compound, in conjunction with the name of a discipline, as in medical informatics, bio-informatics, etc., it denotes the specialization of informatics to the management and processing of data, information and knowledge in the named discipline." Michael Fourman, 2002, Informatics Research Report

Human-Computer Interaction

Human-computer interaction is an inter-disciplinary field that invokes aspects of psychology, design, computer science, anthropology and other fields to study how humans interact with computers.

Information Architecture

Information architecture involves structuring, organizing and labeling information so that users can find what they are looking for. Elegant information architecture serves as the basis of graphical user interface design.

Knowledge Management

Knowledge management is most often employed within organizations to identify, create, organize, and distribute knowledge among its employees.

Medical Informatics

Medical informatics involves the organization of information and the creation of information systems that support medicine and clinical practice. Most often, practitioners in this field have a background in both the medicine and computer science.

Social Informatics

Social informatics is another inter-diciplinary field that addresses information systems from a social perspective. Information systems are often evaluated in terms of the roles they play in a particular community or institution.
